Spring Greens, oil on canvas, 8X10"
This painting was a surprise to me. It was one of those scenes with so much information, I stood there a little stymied as to where to start. My good painting buddy, Liz Wiltzen (click on Liz's blogspot with the link on the right) and I have been talking a lot about process with plein air painting. It has really been grist for the mill. I just kept reminding myself about what the "why" of this piece. I loved the spring greens against the dark background conifers and the violet-blue mountains. It was all about color and pattern. With that in mind, I painted the colors and patterns, leaving out whatever extraneous information I could. It was one of those happy little "fall off the brush" paintings. I love it when that happens. It makes up for the other paintings that you end up having to wrestle to the ground.

Nice! Looks kinda like Notch Hill area.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it! Actually, this is the field behind Liz's studio in Canmore. It was just beautiful this spring.
ReplyDeleteI love this! Leaving out 'details' really makes the scene come alive. Love the colors, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat painting, it works well with your approach. I love your loose brushwork and enjoyed touring your site. Very nice paintings!
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm faced with TMI I need to keep reminding myself to focus on the whole. I often forget! Nice work.
ReplyDeleteA good reminder Gaye...I struggled with aspen myself today, so it was good to see this, even if it was a long time since you posted it!
